SKYPE founders are to launch Joost, a full screen and interactive online tv media resource.Of course this shall be hosted by an array of advertisements to keep costs ‘free’ for consumers, but with the digitisation of media and on demand services, this can only be a hit for those connected users and highly socially engaged individuals.
Search features and the individualisation of content suggest that Joost will enable the personalisation and flexibility of services and information in a way that the iGeneration find most attractive. It will be interesting to see whether social networking will be part of such usability; where YouTube before has allowed users to interact as well as download online content.
Ultimately such a resource needs to be adaptable and as much about the experience of downloading information and interacting with online resources as providing the actual content material itself.
This could be the end of poor quality ‘reality’ shows, and days of streamed ‘live’ content. Instead perhaps users will become media connoisseurs, savvy in their choice of programme selection and entertainment… hmm only time shall tell...
